HTC TyTN woes

My HTC TyTN semi-died when I came back from a holiday trip yesterday.

It almost ran out of battery at the airport in Bologna where I shut it off and it was without power for about 12 hours. When I charged the battery and turned it on, it now only shows two items in the start menu: standard "Today" and a mysterious "coldinit" choice, which doesn't seem to do anything when clicked.

Soft reset returns the device to the same state, i.e. I cannot start any programs from the start menu etc. Luckily the phone works and everything else too that is startable from the hardware buttons. Also all my data was there. Only the start menu is messed up.

I decided to resort to a hard reset by holding the left and right soft keys down and pressing the soft reset button. That seemed to return the device to factory default settings. Luckily the user manual is online ;)

I wonder what happened?
